A Pashmina is more than a garment; it is a living heirloom, hand-woven with care by artisans in
Kashmir. With the right care, your Pashmina can be treasured for generations. This guide covers
everything you need to know to preserve its softness, sheen, and integrity.
Dos and Don'ts
Do
Dry clean only through a reputable dry cleaner familiar with wool and Pashmina.
Don't
Never machine wash, tumble dry, or use harsh detergents.
Do
Store in a breathable muslin cloth or cotton bag away from direct sunlight.
Don't
Avoid plastic bags which trap moisture and cause fibre damage.
Cleaning Your Pashmina
Regular Care
Pashmina rarely needs frequent cleaning. Airing it in a cool, shaded area for a few hours after each
use helps remove odours and refresh the fabric.
Spot Cleaning
For small stains:
- Blot gently with a clean white cloth
- Use only lukewarm water and a tiny amount of mild wool-safe detergent
- Never rub the fabric
- Air dry flat, never wring or twist
Professional Dry Cleaning
For thorough cleaning, always use a specialist dry cleaner who has experience with Pashmina or fine
wool. Explain that your item is 100% Pashmina and hand-embroidered (if applicable).
Storage
Short-Term Storage
- Fold gently and place in a cotton bag or wrap in muslin cloth
- Store in a cool, dry drawer away from direct sunlight
- Avoid hanging as this can stretch the fabric over time
Long-Term Storage
- Ensure the Pashmina is completely dry before storing
- Wrap in acid-free tissue paper
- Place in a breathable cotton box or bag
- Add natural moth repellents like cedar wood or dried lavender
- Never use mothballs directly on Pashmina
- Refold periodically (every 6 months) to prevent permanent creases
Everyday Handling
- Wear over silk or cotton to minimise friction against skin
- Avoid contact with sharp jewellery, watches, or rough surfaces
- Keep away from perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics
- Do not sit on your Pashmina; this can cause creases and pulls
- If it snags, do not pull; gently push the yarn back into place
Dealing with Wrinkles
Pashmina naturally softens and drapes better with wear. For persistent wrinkles:
- Hang in a steamy bathroom for 15-20 minutes
- Or use a fabric steamer on a low setting, held at least 15 cm away
- Never iron directly; if necessary, use the lowest setting with a cotton cloth barrier
Moth Protection
Moths can damage Pashmina fibres. To prevent infestation:
- Keep storage areas clean and dust-free
- Use natural repellents like cedar, lavender sachets, or neem leaves
- Inspect stored Pashminas every few months
- If you spot moth activity, dry clean immediately and store separately
What Makes Pashmina Special
Pashmina comes from the fine undercoat of Changthangi goats living at high altitudes in Ladakh. Each
fibre is:
- Extremely fine (12-16 microns)
- Naturally warm and lightweight
- Delicate and requires gentle care
- Improves with age when properly maintained
When to Seek Professional Help
Consult a Pashmina specialist if you encounter:
- Extensive stains or damage
- Moth or pest damage
